ISLAMABAD: Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) on Friday rejected the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa domestic violence bill, citing reasons that it was in contradictions with the Shariah.
A CII statement stated that the reason for rejecting the bill had been sent to the government. The statement also mentioned that the bill was rejected by the council on account of it being contradictory to the Shariah. The government had sent the bill for acceptance to the Council of Islamic Ideology, which advises the legislature whether or not a law is repugnant or in contradiction with the laws of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah.
The CII had earlier irked the provincial government for delaying the domestic violence bill. The council had not submitted the reply till Friday noon. On Thursday, Paktunkhwa’s Commission on Status of Women Chairperson Nelum Toru told reporters that about 70 per cent women were being victimised in different forms of violence.
The Commission on Status of Women chairperson noted that the ratio of domestic violence is very high in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as compared to other provinces.
