ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday expressed his deep shock over the killing of Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani and many other civilians in the Indian-held Jammu Kashmir by the Indian military and paramilitary forces.
“It is deplorable that excessive and unlawful force was used against the civilians who were protesting against the killing of Burhan Wani,” he said in his statement. Such oppressive measures could not deter the valiant people of Jammu Kashmir from their demand of exercising their right to self-determination in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council, he said.
The prime minister expressed serious concern over the continued detention of the Kashmiri leadership in the disputed state and called upon the Indian government to fulfill its human rights obligations as well as its commitments under the UN Security Council’s resolutions. Wani was the son of a school headmaster and had become a freedom fighter over the last five years.
He regularly posted video messages online and invited young men to join the national independence movement. Indian authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in most parts of the disputed state after Wani was killed but massive protests continued despite the attempts to suppress struggle.
